Introduction

Be immersed in the exciting world of ‘Alice’ this summer. Special Exhibition ‘Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser’ will be held. The first major exhibition tracing back the cultural phenomenon of ‘Alice’ over 160 years from her hometown in the UK.

Originally published in 1865 by Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pen name of Lewis Carroll, ‘Alice's Adventures in Wonderland’ has been translated into more than 170 languages to date. The story transcends the boundaries of children's literature and are shared by people around the world as an inspiration for all imaginations.

No matter how you first encountered Alice's adventures (whether it was with the original story, a bedtime story, or a Disney movie), the character continues to captivate people across time and space as new generations step into ‘Wonderland’ one after another.

Being a cultural icon, her influence will be presented for the first time in a comprehensive and new way in Japan this summer. This is the world touring exhibition of ‘Alice: Curiouser and Curiouser’ which was held at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London in 2021. With the exhibition also specially tailored for Japan, visitors will be transported to the ‘Curiouser and Curiouser’ world.

This exhibition will introduce approximately 300 pieces ranging from the origins of the story, including Lewis Carroll's conception, as well as drawings by John Tenniel, who worked on the illustration. Also, its influence on various fields beyond literature, including film, theater, fashion, art, music, and photography will be presented.

Lewis Carroll's wondrous world of the story, as well as his unique characters and motifs, have led to the creation of numerous new interpretations, and have inspired leading artists, designers, film directors, writers, and scientists. They include Salvador Dali, Yayoi Kusama, The Beatles, and Vivienne Westwood.

The ‘Curiouser and Curiouser’ world of ‘Alice,’ is the source of inspiration for various fields and new creations. It will all be presented in a playful and immersive way through the exhibition. Children and adults alike can enjoy a great ‘Alice's Adventures in Wonderland’ experience.
