PAUL McCARTNEY Photographs:1963-64 Eyes of the Storm
Dates: Fri. July 19 - Tues. September 24, 2024
About
The National Portrait Gallery in London celebrated its renewal with a special unprecedented exhibition featuring never-before-seen private images captured by Sir Paul McCartney himself. For everyone in Japan and beyond, this exhibition will be held at Tokyo City View (Roppongi Hills) from July 2024, with plans to tour Osaka thereafter.
The Beatles debuted in 1962 and swiftly rose to a global phenomenon. This exhibition chronicles the pivotal three-month period from December 1963, when they became a global sensation, until they captured America on 'The Ed Sullivan Show' in February 1964.
Sir Paul McCartney captured the frenzy of 'Beatlemania' at the time with his Pentax camera, and the photographs he took depict the excitement of that era. McCartney himself described these images as the 'Eyes of the Storm,' encapsulating the journey he and The Beatles embarked on, from their meteoric rise to becoming global superstars that swept the world off its feet.
The selected photographs for this exhibition total around 250. They were personally chosen by Sir Paul McCartney himself and offers insights into the period. Expect to see rare and precious photos that have remained in their original negative or contact sheet form for over 60 years, including shots taken backstage in Liverpool and during their appearance on the 'The Ed Sullivan Show.'
