Introduction

As a popular artist who was active in the 1980s, Jean-Michel Basquiat has produced over 2000 drawings and 1000 paintings over a period of 10 years.

Not only does his work contain intense energy, it epitomizes 20th century modern art, culminating colors influenced by jazz, hip hop and African folklore. His fame further increased after he passed away, and today, he is recognized as one of the masters of art in the 20th century.

His works have greatly influenced the world of art, fashion and culture, and are being exhibited in many of the world’s most renowned museums.

Basquiat frequently visited Japan and had more than 10 solo and group exhibitions, articulately reflecting the Japanese trends of the period.

This exhibition brings together 130 paintings, drawings and objects from all over the world, many of which reflect the artist engagement with Japan’s rich history and culture.
