Introduction
Grace Field House is where children without parents are sent.
These 38 children live a modest yet happy life with Mom, though they are not related by blood.
The three oldest children in the house are 11-year-olds: Emma, Norman, and Ray. They are also the smartest, scoring full marks on their tests every morning.
One night, after the children had seen recently-adopted Conny off, Emma and Norman realize that Conny had forgotten something. They rush out to the gate, which is past the fence the children are forbidden to go beyond.
