THE MAGIC HOUR 魔幻時刻
Opening June 5 at the Lyric Theatre, The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
Fuji Television Network, Inc. (“Fuji TV”) continues to accelerate its global business strategy with the announcement that The Magic Hour—the blockbuster film written and directed by Koki Mitani—will be adapted for the stage in Hong Kong. Originally released in June 2008, The Magic Hour became a major hit, grossing ¥3.92 billion at the box office.
This fast-paced, original comedy follows a man who, after getting involved with a crime boss’s mistress, is ordered to produce a legendary hitman in exchange for his life —only to trick a struggling actor into playing the role, setting off a wildly entertaining chain of events. The film featured an all-star cast including Koichi Sato, Satoshi Tsumabuki, Eri Fukatsu, Haruka Ayase, and Toshiyuki Nishida, and quickly gained widespread acclaim upon release.

In 2022, the story was remade in China as Too Cool to Kill, achieving phenomenal success with a box office gross of approximately ¥53.38 billion, becoming the highest-grossing Japanese film remake in China at the time.
The title has since also been adapted for the stage in Shanghai and beyond, with more than 50 performances staged since 2024. Now, the Hong Kong stage adaptation brings together a stellar cast of acclaimed and popular performers, including Tse Kwan Ho, Eric Kot, Rosa Maria Velasco, Anson Kong, Simon Lo Man Kit, and Choi Hiu Tung, Christy.
With broad cross-generational appeal, all 20 initial performances sold out immediately, prompting the addition of nine extra shows—highlighting the production’s strong local buzz and anticipation. Known for comedy structures that transcend cultural boundaries, the works of Koki Mitani enjoy widespread popularity, including a strong fan base in China.
Interest in Koki Mitani’s body of work has been steadily growing in recent years, signaling strong potential for further international expansion.
As part of its transformation into a true content company, Fuji TV has clearly set out its strategic direction: to expand distribution channels into global markets and enhance and develop its content distribution capabilities through collaboration with external partners, as well as to develop and create IP content that can be delivered worldwide.—ultimately drawing up a roadmap that leads to film adaptations and expansion into international markets.
The Hong Kong stage adaptation of The Magic Hour stands as a prime example of this strategy in action—a successful case of a film being reimagined and localized for new audiences, showcasing the unique potential of content-driven business development. We hope you will continue to follow Fuji TV’s content distribution initiatives and its expanding global business development.
■Koki Mitani (Original Film – Scriptwriter & Director) comments:
“I am truly delighted that my work will be brought to the stage in Hong Kong through the efforts of such an outstanding team. I also have nothing but high expectations for the wonderful cast. Comedy is universal. Even if the language is different, laughter is the same. If audiences can rediscover and feel that truth once again, nothing would make me happier.”
■James Chu – Creator and Producer of the Hong Kong stage production The Magic Hour, and Founder of Dharma Workshop comments:
“I first watched The Magic Hour many years ago, and it left a lasting impression on me. Since then, I have followed Koki Mitani’s work across film and television. In Hong Kong, the University of Laughs has previously been adapted for the stage, making this the second time one of Mitani’s works has been brought to life in theater here. Through this production, we hope to introduce even more audiences to the brilliance of his storytelling. I believe this project will serve as an important milestone, and we look forward to continuing to bring more of his works to the stage in the future.”
