Praemium Imperiale Winners Announced

The winners for this year’s Praemium Imperiale Laureates were announced in New York, London, Paris, Rome, Berlin and Tokyo, yesterday by the Japan Art Association. They are:

2012 Praemium Imperiale Laureates
Painting: Cai Guo-Qiang (China)
Sculpture: Cecco Bonanotte (Italy)
Architecture: Henning Larsen (Denmark)
Music: Phillip Glass (Music)
Theater/Film: Yoko Morishita (Japan)

The Praemium Imperiale is awarded in the five disciplines of Painting, Sculpture, Architecture, Music and Theatre/Film. Artists are recognized for their achievements, for the impact they have had internationally on the arts, and for their role in enriching the global community. Since its beginning in 1989, the award has become a mark of the highest international distinction. Each laureate receives an honorarium of 15 million yen, and a testimonial letter and medal will be presented by honorary patron of the Japan Art Association Prince Hitachi in an awards ceremony to be held in Tokyo October 23rd, 2012.

In addition to the Praemium Imperiale awards, the Japan Art Association gives away a grant of 5 million yen to a group or institution that encourages the involvement of young people in the arts. This year the grant was awarded to the Sphinx Organization based in Detroit, USA.
