Written and directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, “Our Little Sister” is a charming intimate film about family bond and female independence, starring Haruka Ayase, Masami Nagasawa, Kaho and Suzu Hirose. Since its premiere on June 13, 2015, the film has attracted wide attention for its deeply touching story, cinematography of beautiful scenery of Kamakura, and stunning performance by the leading actresses. It quickly became a tremendous hit, grossing over 1.65 billion yen at the box office; while it also received widespread acclaim among critics around the world. The film has been subsequently invited to prestigious film festivals, including the 68th annual Cannes Film Festival, the 40th annual Toronto International Film Festival, and the 63rd annual San Sebastian Film Festival.
On top of its global success, “Our Little Sister” has also been lapping up awards and garnering acclaim around the country. Sweeping 12 nominations and 13 awards at this year’s Japan Academy Prize (annouced on Jan. 18) as well as two awards at the Mainichi Film Award (Jan 21), the film has so far won over 31festival awards in total.
