The program was recognized for uncovering new insights into one of Japan’s most widely known unsolved cases through rigorous investigative reporting. Using exclusive access to previously unseen crime scene photographs and confidential DNA analysis conducted by the Metropolitan Police Department, the documentary successfully presents a newly emerging portrait of the suspect. In pursuit of identifying the perpetrator, the program also highlights the need for legal reform to introduce advanced DNA profiling techniques utilized in criminal investigations in the United States.

By focusing on what is now required to resolve a long-standing unsolved case, the documentary demonstrates exceptional journalistic integrity, clear and analytical treatment of the facts, and deep insight into the crime itself. Its determined approach to pursuing the truth resonated strongly with the jury and led to this award. This makes it the first time Fuji TV has won this prestigious honor.

Also, “A Kabuki Legacy: Keeping a Father’s Promise” was a National Winner for Japan for the BEST DOCUMENTARY PROGRAMME (ONE-OFF) category.

■Haruka Jyoho (Producer/Fuji Television Network, Inc.) comments: “We are truly grateful and deeply honored to receive this international recognition. We would like to express our sincere appreciation to everyone who has supported us. Twenty-four years after the incident occurred, we produced this program with two main objectives: to conduct a thorough re-examination of this long-discussed unsolved case based on our own exclusive information and uncover a new profile of the perpetrator, and to offer proposals on what is most needed for the investigation going forward. We believe that the most crucial element in moving closer to solving long-term unsolved cases is ensuring that reporting in pursuit of the truth never ceases. We will continue to investigate and report on unsolved cases from new angles and work to uncover new facts.”
