Hangin' Around with No Plan

Interview Date: May 2020

Here’s the Special Talk interview we did with the producer of one of the most entertaining shows currently being aired on Saturdays, “Hangin’ Around with No Plan.” Kenji Nagamori has been a producer for this show, since it started in April 2012. The show celebrated its 200th special in April 2020. In the program, Hiroiki Ariyoshi and Fuji TV announcer, Yoko Shono stroll around various towns in Tokyo without having any definite purpose or plan, but their honest and entertaining fusion makes the show so vibrant and exciting for the viewers.

Q: Are there any specific reasons as to why most of the shootings are focused in Tokyo, when there are other prefectures such as Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba?

After Yoko Shono became a supervisor for early evening news, we have been adjusting the times for our on-location shootings to fit with her daily schedule, and most of the filming has mainly been based around Tokyo. It made us realize, that if you look and explore each of the towns very closely and in depth, you will be blessed with many astounding discoveries.

Q:What are some of the definitive factors for deciding the filming locations?

Usually, we don’t think about it too deeply, however, if we want to depict some of the attractive elements of a town, for its beautiful cherry blossoms, fall colors, as well as during the summer holidays, we sometimes take seasons and the time of the year into consideration.

Q:The show is something which allows its viewers to experience a real “strolling experience,” from the early hours of a day. What are some of the main reasoning behind this format, and how does it affect the ways in which the show is being produced?

We are always trying to portray a sense of “realness” for the strolls. Therefore, when planning out the routes for each of the shows, we try to take as much time to pick out the appropriate courses.

Q:The show brings out the best of Hiroiki Ariyoshi’s folksy character. Could you tell us some of the main reasons for casting him? Also, could you describe some of his charming elements?

Back at the time we were originally planning the show, we wanted to create something which brought out the down-to-earth goodness of Hiroiki Ariyoshi, who was gaining popularity, through his outspoken and clear-cut ways of expression.

Q: Supporting announcer, Yoko Shono and her laid back and modest character seem to create a good harmony with Hiroiki Ariyoshi’s distinctive character for the show. Do you think this is what makes it so great?

I think Yoko Shono is perfectly suited for the nature of the show. Along with Hiroiki Ariyoshi, she’s also really enjoying the on-location shootings. Sometimes, she has too much fun (lol). But this part about having fun, reflects the program’s theme of strolling around with an “honest” mindset, something that only the two of them can truly bring out the best of.

Q:The witty dialogue with the guests are also impeccable. What are some of the things that the production team focus on when choosing the guests?

We usually imagine what kind of “chemical reaction” each of the guests will have with Hiroiki Ariyoshi when considering the appearances. We sometimes pick special guests which may evoke feelings of freshness, in order to keep it continuously entertaining for the viewers.

Q:This show is also being aired in Southeast Asia, as well as Taiwan. It’s especially a hit among the viewers from these areas, because there is a tendency for people from these regions to re-visit Japan numerous times, and rather than going to popular places such as “Senso-ji Temple,” Tokyo Tower, and renowned tourist destinations, they often try to discover more new ways to enjoy Tokyo. So, for the viewers in foreign countries, could you pick out three places, which were the most memorable, and tell us why?

★Kuramae, Tokyo: The fusion between traditional and newly developed shops in the area makes visiting this place so exciting. The off-streets are also great.

★Kuhonbutsu, Tokyo: From a temple, a garden, through to traditional buildings, it’s one of Tokyo’s best-kept secret. There are also many delicious restaurants and the streets are appealing.

★North Shinagawa area: The aura of the fishing village as how it was during the Edo Period still remains, and new shops are increasing too.

Q:Lastly, could you give us a message for our viewers abroad?

The show gently explores Tokyo’s main and off-streets, so I hope everyone will continue to enjoy the show, whilst relishing the relaxing atmosphere of Hiroiki Ariyoshi and Yoko Shono.
