[Official Selection: 79th Cannes Film Festival - Competition]
The latest work from Hirokazu Koreeda — the Palme d'Or-winning director of Shoplifters — makes a triumphant return to Cannes. Set in the near future, the film follows Otone, an architect, and her husband Kensuke, two years on from the death of their young son. When a humanoid fashioned in the boy's likeness — named Kakeru — is brought into their home, the couple responds in strikingly different ways: Otone is unable to conceal her joy, whilst Kensuke retreats into careful distance. "Just call me uncle," he says. As the rhythms of family life tentatively begin to stir, both are compelled to confront the grief each has carried in silence — and the growing distance between them. What does it mean to remain a couple? What does it mean to become a family once more? With characteristic sensitivity, emotional precision and an unfailing eye for the unspoken, Koreeda delivers a quietly devastating portrait of love, loss, and the fragile, necessary hope of beginning again.
