From “Usotoki Rhetoric”
Ouji Suzuka
What were your thoughts when you were offered this role?
I always hoped I would get to be part of a ‘Getsuku’ Monday night drama someday, but I never imagined it would happen so soon, let alone as the lead. The original story is incredibly interesting, and the character I’m playing, Soma Iwai, is fascinating. I’m really looking forward to filming and feel grateful for this opportunity. I’m ready to give it my all.
After reading the original story and script, what impression did you get?
The characters are all so unique, like Kanoko who can detect lies, and Soma, who's great at both deduction and bluffing. I was also drawn in by the intricate foreshadowing and structure of the story. It’s not just about solving mysteries, but also deeper themes like 'trust' and 'faith,' which are so important in relationships. The story made me reflect a lot, and I think it’s a great show.
This is your first lead role in a Monday night drama. How do you feel?
The previous drama in this time slot, “Where does the Sea Begin,” was such a beautiful production. This time slot has produced many timeless classics, so I do feel the pressure. But I’m excited to work with such an amazing cast and crew, and I want to create a great atmosphere while filming.
What’s your impression of Honoka Matsumoto, with whom you’re co-starring for the first time?
I recently saw her perform on stage. I’ve watched her in many TV shows and films, and she comes across as someone with a wide range of talents. After chatting during rehearsals and interviews, I found her to be very calm and full of kind words. In the show, I think my character will be leading hers, so I’m hoping we can have fun on set while working through the scenes together.
Is there anything you’re keeping in mind while portraying your character?
Whether Soma is casually living his day-to-day life or solving a case—has a big impact on the tone of the story, so I want to be careful about how I express that. There are moments in the script that really moved me while I was reading, so I want to approach those with care and give them the attention they deserve.
Any message for the viewers?
The show is set in the early Showa era, which is something new for Monday night dramas. To recreate the unique fashion of the early Showa era, where traditional Japanese and Western styles blend seamlessly, I had a suit custom-made from scratch, including detailed measurements. Every little aspect is crafted with care and attention to detail. We're working hard as a team to deliver a show that'll give you something to look forward to every Monday. Stay tuned and enjoy!

What were your thoughts when you were offered the role?
I was so surprised! It was like, 'Me, in a Monday night drama?!' I couldn’t believe it. Honestly, I couldn’t stop feeling anxious, but at the same time, I was genuinely thrilled.
After reading the original story and script, what was your impression?
It struck me as a story that delicately portrays people’s emotions. The struggles and hardships are also conveyed clearly, but by the end, it leaves you with a smile. It feels like a story that touches on the warmth of human connections.
This will be your first lead role in a Monday night drama. How do you feel about that?
The thought of being the lead in a Monday night drama for the first time honestly has me feeling quite nervous, but all I can do is give it my absolute best so that everyone can enjoy the show! I want to keep things calm and fun with the amazing team on set, and carry that energy all the way to the finish line.
What’s your impression of Ouji Suzuka, with whom you’re co-starring for the first time?
He has such a fresh and gentle aura. The role he’s playing is very different from the image I have of him, so I’m excited to see how he brings his character to life!
Is there anything you’re keeping in mind while portraying your character?
My character, Kanoko, initially struggles with accepting her own personality, but through meeting others, she gradually starts to face herself and find her own path. I want to carefully depict that journey. I’ll be staying true to the original manga and its gentle atmosphere as I bring Kanoko’s story to life in the drama.
Any message for the viewers?
I hope this show will bring moments of healing, laughter, and a little bit of heart-fluttering romance. We’re working hard to deliver a story that you’ll genuinely enjoy. Please look forward to it!
