100th Anniversary of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum ANDREW WYETH Boundaries or Windows
Exhibition Dates: April 28 (Tue) – July 5 (Sun), 2026
About
The First Major Retrospective in Japan Following Wyeth’s Passing.
Andrew Wyeth (1917–2009) stands as one of the foremost figures in twentieth-century American representational painting.
In the years following the Second World War, when movements such as Abstract Expressionism, Neo-Dada, and Pop art came to prominence, Wyeth distanced himself from these trends, devoting his art instead to depicting the familiar people and landscapes that surrounded him. His paintings are far more than faithful reproductions of what lay before his eyes; they are deeply reflective of his own inner, spiritual world.
Throughout his works, motifs such as windows and doors—symbols of boundaries and thresholds—appear repeatedly. While the idea of a boundary has long been explored within the history of Western art, for Wyeth it served as a more intimate connection to, or division from, his private world.
This exhibition focuses on Wyeth’s unique expression of these boundaries, inviting visitors to experience the world he so poignantly portrayed.
