Joan Miró and Japan

Introduction

Joan Miró (1893-1983), an artist born in Barcelona, Spain, still remains popular around the world, with a major retrospective exhibition held in Paris in recent years, drawing renewed attention to his activities.

However, he had a particular admiration for Japan and behind his unique creative activities was his deep familiarity with Japanese culture, something which is not well known. Moreover, Japan also discovered his appealing aspects early on, leading to his invitational visit to the country. Joan Miró and Japan had a mutually beneficial relationship.

At this exhibition, there’s a wide range of works from his early days, which symbolize his admiration for Japan thru to his representative works including those which were first introduced in Japan. In addition, Japanese folk artifacts and other items from his own collection will return to Japan for the first time since his passing.

The world's first exhibition to fully explore the mutual respect and affection that existed between Miró and Japan.
